Types of Trauma Surgery

There are different types of fracture surgeries, depending on the location and severity of the fracture. Some common types of fracture surgery include:

1. Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF): In this procedure, a surgeon makes an incision to access the fractured bone and realigns the broken fragments. Internal fixators such as screws, plates, or rods are then used to hold the bone in place during the healing process.
2. Closed Reduction: This procedure is performed without making a large incision. The surgeon manually manipulates the broken bone fragments back into their correct position, sometimes using traction or splints. The bone is then immobilized with casts, braces, or splints to facilitate healing.
3. External Fixation: In certain cases where a fracture is complex or open, an external fixator may be used. This involves placing pins or screws into the bone on either side of the fracture and attaching them to an external frame outside the body. The external fixator stabilizes the bone and allows for proper alignment and healing.

Recovery

Recovery from fracture surgery varies depending on the type and severity of the fracture, as well as the individual’s overall health. It often involves wearing a cast or splint for a period of time to immobilize the fractured bone and promote healing. Physical therapy may be recommended to restore strength, motion, and function to the affected area.

It is essential to follow post-operative instructions given by the surgeon to ensure a successful recovery. These may include taking prescribed medications, avoiding weight-bearing activities, and attending follow-up appointments to monitor the healing progress.
