Total knee replacement, also known as total knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure in which a damaged or worn-out knee joint is replaced with an artificial joint or prosthesis. This procedure is most commonly performed for severe knee arthritis or other conditions that cause chronic knee pain and limited mobility.
During the surgery, the damaged bone and cartilage in the knee joint are removed, and the surfaces of the bones are resurfaced with metal and plastic components. These components are then fixed to the remaining healthy bone using cement or special techniques that promote bone growth into the prosthesis.
Total knee replacement surgery is typically recommended when nonsurgical treatments such as medication, physical therapy, and assistive devices no longer provide sufficient relief. The goal of the surgery is to alleviate pain, improve mobility, and enhance the overall function of the knee joint.
Recovery after total knee replacement surgery involves a period of rehabilitation and physical therapy to restore strength, flexibility, and range of motion in the knee. Most patients experience significant improvement in pain and mobility within a few months after surgery.
While total knee replacement surgery can be very effective in reducing pain and improving quality of life, it is important to note that it is a major surgery with potential risks and complications. These can include infection, blood clots, nerve damage, implant failure, and stiffness in the knee joint. However, complications are relatively rare, and most people achieve positive outcomes from the procedure.
