A bunion is a painful deformity of the joint at the base of the big toe. It occurs when the big toe pushes against the adjacent toe, causing the joint to become misaligned and enlarged. This misalignment leads to the formation of a bony bump on the side of the foot, which can be red, swollen, and tender.
Bunions can cause discomfort and pain while walking or wearing shoes, and they may also lead to other foot problems such as corns, calluses, and hammertoes. They can be caused by various factors, including genetics, foot structure, certain medical conditions, and often by wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes.
Treatment options for bunions depend on the severity of the condition. Non-surgical treatments may include wearing wider or more comfortable shoes, using bunion pads or cushions, applying ice packs to reduce inflammation, taking over-the-counter pain relievers, and practicing specific exercises to strengthen the foot muscles. In more severe cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to correct the deformity and alleviate the pain.
MIS techniques to correct bunion is the best surgical method which leaves less scar and a faster return to work.
