De Quervain’s syndrome, also known as De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, is a painful condition that affects the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. It occurs when the tendons become inflamed or irritated, leading to pain, swelling, and difficulty with thumb and wrist movement.
The exact cause of De Quervain’s syndrome is often unclear, but it is thought to be related to repetitive hand and thumb movements, such as excessive texting, typing, or repetitive grasping. It is more common in women, especially those who are pregnant or have recently given birth.
The symptoms of De Quervain’s syndrome include pain in the thumb side of the wrist that may radiate up the forearm, swelling and tenderness at the base of the thumb, and difficulty with gripping, pinching, or moving the thumb or wrist.
Treatment for De Quervain’s syndrome usually involves a combination of rest, splinting, and anti-inflammatory medications. Physical therapy and exercises may also be recommended to improve strength and flexibility. In severe cases, a corticosteroid injection or surgery may be necessary to relieve symptoms.
With appropriate treatment and modification of activities, most people with De Quervain’s syndrome can fully recover and return to their normal daily activities. However, if left untreated, the condition can become chronic and lead to long-term pain and functional limitations. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment are important for a successful outcome.
